Nathaniel Ru is helping take Sweetgreens to the next level

Nathaniel Ru, known as being one of the founders of the Sweetgreens food chain, was born in Pasadena, CA in 1985. Ru graduated from Georgetown University with his B.S in Finance. After Ru graduated he came together with 2 of his Georgetown graduates to start Sweetgreens.

 

Sweetgreens has come to be known for being a seasonal kitchen that has a main focus on sustainability and local sourcing. The location for the first Sweetgreens restaurant was located right in the heart of Georgetown. The restaurant chain has since been able to expand to 27 different locations, located in 6 different states.

 

The 3 founders came up with the idea for Sweetgreens once they noticed that their community didn’t have many restaurants that were delicious, healthy and also eco friendly. In 2010 the 3 founders were able to launch Sweetlife, which since then has come to be known as the regions biggest music and food festival. It is said that each year over 20,000 people attend the event.

 

At Georgetown University, during their senior year, is when the 3 founders began the Sweetgreens dream. It was a short six years later that the Sweetgreens chain was started. The landlord of the tavern space had oddly enough turned out to be the same landlord of the apartment building right around the corner from where Ru and his friends had once lived. The same landlord saw a spark in the 3 men, which only had a semester left to finish at Georgetown University.

 

Next the landlord told them that they needed to come back once they had an architect, a business plan and some business backers. Nearly three and a half weeks later they finally found some backers and an architect. Ru stated that the three of them were really blessed to have got the chance that they did at just the right time.

 

Currently the three men are able to proudly say that they have stores located in the Northeast’s major cities and suburbs. The chain has, since the beginning, continued to serve healthy and fresh meals that are made with ingredients that are bought from local farmers and purveyors. The three men have stated that no matter the amount of stores that Sweetgreens has that they will continue to make sure that each and every store lives up to to Sweetgreens core values. This is one resturant chain that won’t stop till they reach the top of the food industry chain.
